Sound & surround
Test your speakers and fix the 5.1 speaker order
Check every speaker and fix swapped centre or subwoofer channels.
Test each speaker
- Open the Sound page and scroll to Surround 5.1 (the upmix needs to be on, with 6 channels detected).
- Click Test speakers. A short hiss plays from Front Left, Center, Front Right, Surround Right, Surround Left and the Subwoofer in turn, and the button shows which one is playing.
- To test one speaker, click it in the room diagram (FL, C, FR, SUB, SL, SR).
If the sound comes from the wrong speaker
HDMI devices don’t all number their channels the same way. Paatu Cassette reads the layout macOS reports, but some devices report it wrongly, which usually swaps the centre speaker and the subwoofer.
- Under the diagram, open Speaker order.
- It’s normally Automatic (the order macOS reports). Choose the other order: L R C Sub SL SR or L R Sub C SL SR.
- Run Test speakers again. When every speaker matches, you’re done. The choice is remembered.
